Liver: Needle Core or Small Wedge Biopsy |

Guideline & Procedure:- Do not allow the specimen to dry, and avoid crushing it with forceps.
- Count the number of cores, and measure the length and diameter of each core. If the specimen is a wedge biopsy, measure it in three dimensions.
- Describe the specimen (color, fragmentation, nodularity).
- Place cores in a tissue processing bag.
- Section wedge biopsies which are greater than 3 mm. Transect the capsule and submit the tissue on edge.
- Rapid processing procedure: dictate and submit as soon as possible after the specimen arrives in the lab. A 4-hour turnaround time is the goal for all such biopsies.
